WiP #10: How to get noticed
The dark arts of personal branding

LinkedIn is full of what appears to be narcissism.
If your feed is like mine, it's crawling with people taking pictures of themselves attached to a basic story.
I once saw a Founder going Viral because he took a picture of him wearing shorts to work. He made a sweeping statement about how it wasn't unprofessional to do so.
Crazy.
Anyway, there's no value in complaining about algorithms, instead we use them to our advantage.
Here's a different way to think about LinkedIn narcissism and how it works.
There are two types of content you can produce:
Awareness content (Mass audience content that can be understood and engaged with by anyone)
Nurture content (targeted content to the people who would be interested in buying your services)
The game of LinkedIn is pretty clear - it's a platform for people to make money on.
Let's pretend you are an executive business coach.
The total audience size of those who would be interested in paying for your services has now shrunk.
If you posted a story/opinion on the following:
The importance of helping people in life
How your upbringing shaped you as a human
Paternity Leave
Mental Health in Men
You have widened the net of the total amount of people who could be interested to read your content.
If you want rapid account growth, the key is a 80/20 balance in favour of awareness.
But ultimately, if you're not comfortable as a content creator to be talking about yourself the whole time - don't force it.
My golden rule is this.
You must be able to sit and discuss whatever you have posted on LinkedIn without cringing at yourself.
You do you.
CREATIVE CHALLENGE
This week's creative challenge is about brand awareness v nurture content.
Let's keep it simple.
Write 2 Linkedin type posts which are served to grow awareness of you as a brand.
Here's some thought starters:
Introduction to you
Building a business in public
Career win (Problem you've overcame, promotion you gained, etc)
Personal win (ran a marathon, etc)
Struggle you've had recently
What motivates you
Let's practice
Here's a checklist for you to think about when writing brand awareness content.
Is the content personal?
Are you telling a story?
Could it be understood by a mass audience?
Does it spark a conversation?
Is it reflective of you?
Would you be comfortable having this conversation with your friends?
Good luck!
